The Power Within

My Story
Soong Ching Ling is often called the “Mother of Modern China” because she spent her life engaged in hunger for revolutionary changes, philanthropy, and improvement of the rights of women in China. January 27, 1893 saw the birth of one of the famous three Soong sisters in the business-influential Soong family, soong Ching Ling. As part of Soong’s family Ching grew up in wealth and in good education which were advantages that many Chinese women lacked then. Soong Yaoru’s father, a successful businessman, was an educator at heart who emphasised the right of education for every child, boy and girl alike. At an early age, Soong and her sisters were educated in the United States, where they were introduced to Western democratic concepts and egalitarianism which in turn made Soong want to change the status quo in relations to women’s rights in China. The life of Soong Ching Ling changed completely after she met Sun Yat-sen, the founder of the Republic of China, and he engaged her in his revolutionary attempts to overthrow the Qing Dynasty and form the modern republic of China.
Soong Ching Ling, who was Sun Yat-sen's wife and partner, provided him with moral and political support and devoted her efforts to promote his revolutionary ideals. Soong Ching Ling still believes in Sun Yat-sen’s mission even after his demise in 1925. Soong Ching Ling was an active voice for women’s rights and education and health for women whom she viewed as critical for the sustenance of a nation. She also endorsed initiatives to improve the education of women by establishing schools and colleges for girls to take up new subjects in order to develop themselves. After the death of Sun Yat-sen and the subsequent change of the direction of the KMT under Chiang Kai-shek, she became dissatisfied with the course taken by the KMT and went through a phase of seclusion in particular as she observed its escalating authoritarianism and corruption. In the end, Soong Ching Ling was a member of the Communist Party, and although her tie with the party was always regarded as controversial, she was consistently an activist for women’s rights and people’s welfare. She was a woman of principles and resolve unto her last days. Soong Ching Ling has indeed been of great service to the nation in promoting women empowerment and even in changes in different spheres such as health care that improved many lives and indeed helped peoples of China.
